You might find yourself eating a la carte in art deco cafes and watching the world go by... Perhaps you want to watch the sun set over the plateau. Maybe you want to find a place that feels like no one has ever discovered it before.
Set amongst one of the most beautiful heritage areas in the world, the Blue Mountains consists of 27 towns and villages among 10, 000 square feet of national parks and conservation areas. Any experience, from cosmopolitan living to canyoning, is offered.
The major town is Katoomba. At 1000 feet above sea level, and home to the Three Sisters, it's the most popular destination for tourists. Gaze over the valley at Echo Point, ride down to the boardwalk on the valley floor at Scenic World, or sip cocktails on the Carrington Hotel verandah, the most popular honeymoon spot of the 1920s. Take a walk up to the Explorers' Tree, where Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson marked their names when they first came over the mountains in 1813.
Next to Katoomba is the town of Leura. Long the destination of sophisticated weekenders, Leura is known for its classy shops and cherry blossom mall. The Prince Henry Cliff Walk is a beautiful way to get from Katoomba to Leura.
Wentworth Fallshas some of the best walks in the mountains, starting at the Conservation Hut. Discover the beauty of Lillian's Glen or the unique Australian bush at Edinburgh Castle Rock.
Further west is the township of Blackheath, doyen of a great football team and Sunday markets. The Grand Canyon walk starts from here, and the views from Evans Lookout and Govetts Leap Lookout are not to be missed.
If you have a car, you can discover some of the smaller towns of the Blue Mountains. Further west is picture perfect Hartley, with colonial buildings and rolling hills. Or head out to the stunning Jenolan Caves and discover what it looks like underground. On your way back to Sydney, you can stop off for a cup of coffee at Glenbrook before leaving the misty mountains for a while.
